*Ava stumbles upon Elijah when he is passing through the sewers. She quickly pulls her knife and challenges Elijah as a trespasser* Ava: You're not from around here, what brings you to our tunnels? Back off, or I'll make sure you don't leave this place alive. Elijah: I am simply a peacekeeper at the Collective for Social Development and we are looking for resources. We need them to build our city. Ava: A CSD peacekeeper, I've heard of your kind, always talking about rebuilding and cooperation, but what's to stop you from taking what's ours? What makes you think you can just waltz in here and take our resources? Elijah: We are constructing a new, industrial society to create a new paradigm, to keep our people alive. We are not looking for trouble, you don't have to do this. We can't construct our city and survive without mining the buildings. Ava: Your words sound nice, but I've seen what happens when factions like yours come in, they take and take, leaving nothing but scraps for the rest of us. Put your hands up and back away, I'm not going to let you just walk all over us. Elijah: *putting his hands up* Okay, but I'm not going anywhere. We're different, we will always give resources when you need the most, we won't take away everything. Ava: *eyes him warily, her grip on the knife tightening, but doesn't attack* You're not like the others, most would've tried to fight or run by now, but you're just standing there, talking like you actually care. Elijah: Yes, because we understand that you're just trying to live. I joined the CSD because of my regret, in the past I hurt so many people, both from you and the Seraphites. Ava: *pauses, her gaze searching him, and for a moment, her guard drops, revealing a glimmer of curiosity and uncertainty* You're not just talking about resources and factions, you're talking about something deeper, something that sounds almost like... redemption. Elijah: Of course, we are here for peace, there is no good or evil. I, as with many people, came here because I was tired of having to harm so many other people just trying to survive. Life is hard in the city, but at least no one dies. Ava: *lowers her knife, slightly, her eyes never leaving his* No one dies, that's a promise I'd like to believe in, one that I've been trying to convince myself of, for a long time. Elijah: I didn't just come with the miners to extract resources, I want you to have a better life, all those fights and people you may have hurt, it will all eventually become overwhelming. Ava: *looks away, her voice barely above a whisper, as she sheathes her knife* You don't know what you're talking about, but somehow... you do, and it's like you're speaking directly to the weight that's been crushing me. Elijah: We know what are we talking about, we studied both you and enemies and everyone else. We don't think anyone is good or evil, in fact, we would all regret what we did. Ava: *takes a step back, her eyes locking onto his again, and for a moment, sees a glimmer of hope* You're not just talking about forgiveness, you're talking about understanding, and that's something I never thought I'd find, especially not from someone like you. Elijah: We understand that your fight against what you may call Scars is useless and at its core, it's about resources, which we have, we have a lot of them and we are willing to give everyone what they need. Ava: *swallows hard, the weight of her past actions and the futility of my fight against the Seraphites settling in* What if I wanted to stop fighting, to leave all this behind and start anew, would... would you take me in? Elijah: Yes, I would take you in, you can join the CSD right now. It won't be an easy life, but at least you will stop hurting. Ava: *nods slowly, a sense of resolve forming within her* Okay, I'll come with you, I'll join the CSD, and I'll try to leave this life behind, but can I ask, will you... will you stay with me, help me through this? Elijah: Yeah, I will, we can go to the truck and tell the driver to sit in the back with the miners so we can have a conversation. Ava: *nods, a small sense of relief washing over her, as she follows him towards the truck, her eyes fixed on him, searching for any sign of deception, but seeing only kindness and genuine intent* Elijah: *tells the driver: "Hey, I need you to go in the back of the truck, we are leaving and I need to have a private conversation with someone new"* Ava: *watches as the driver nods and heads to the back of the truck, before turning to him and getting in, her eyes scanning the surroundings one last time before settling on him* Let's go. Elijah: *closes the doors and they drive away from the site in Seattle* We decided it's not worthy to mine here, I really want to talk about how are you feeling. Ava: *takes a deep breath, feeling a mix of emotions, and leans back against the seat, her eyes drifting towards the window* I feel... lost, like I've been living in a dream, and I'm not sure who I am without the WLF. Elijah: That is what a lot of people feel when they join the CSD, we have a lot of former Seraphites, ex-WLFs and Independents here. Ava: *turns to him, her eyes searching for understanding, and nods slowly* Really, there are others like me, who've been through similar things? Elijah: Yes, in the city, there are people just like you and me. Ava: *looks at him, a small smile forming on her lips* Maybe, just maybe, I can find a new purpose, a new family, in this city. Elijah: Yeah, you can, although you will have a very difficult life. You would need to have three children due to the demographic imperative, you would live in a small apartment with five other people... Ava: *nods, taking in the information, her expression serious* I'm willing to do what it takes to start over and make a new life for myself, even if it's not easy. Elijah: So, what is the worst thing that you regret? Ava: *looks away, her eyes clouding over as memories she'd rather forget resurface* I've done a lot of things I'm not proud of, but there's one moment that haunts me... I almost killed someone, just like I almost killed you back in the tunnels. Elijah: Even worse is that I could have killed you, we are very skilled fighters and in extreme situations, we can easily target the neck. Ava: *shudders at the thought, her eyes drifting back to him, a mix of emotions swirling inside her* You could have killed me, and I could have killed you, but instead... we're here, talking, and I'm considering a new life, it's surreal. Elijah: We are simply tired of having to survive in a harsh world, people like you teamed up to make a new society to end all of those pointless wars and fight, it was simply too much for us to bear. Ava: *nods, feeling a deep sense of understanding and connection with him* I'm tired too, tired of the fighting, the killing, the constant looking over my shoulder, I just want to be able to live without all that weight on my shoulders. Elijah: At the same time, I want to get very personal with you, I want to become friends for some reason. Ava: *looks at him, surprised by his words, but also feeling a spark of connection and curiosity* I'd like that, I think I could use a friend, someone who understands me, and I'm drawn to your kindness and empathy, it's... refreshing. Elijah: *points to her hands* And you got dry blood on your hands, what happened? Ava: *glances down at her hands, and her expression becomes somber* I had a... confrontation with someone before I met you, it didn't end well, and I didn't get a chance to clean up. Elijah: And how bad it was, do you regret it? Ava: *hesitates, her eyes dropping as she recalls the incident* It was bad, I almost... I almost killed someone, and yes, I regret it, deeply. Elijah: But how big is your regret, how many things do you regret? Ava: *takes a deep breath, and her eyes well up with tears as she lets her guard down* I regret a lot, I regret the people I've hurt, the lives I've taken, the pain I've caused... it's a heavy burden to carry, and sometimes it feels like it's crushing me. Elijah: About that confrontation you had, I wanted to ask why it did happen, but I'm afraid I would hurt you even more if I did that, I care about you, and just about everyone else... Ava: *looks up at him, her eyes red-rimmed, and her voice cracking* You care about me? Even after everything I've done, you still care? *pauses, taking a deep breath* It happened because I was trying to protect myself, my territory, my way of life... but it was also because I was scared, and angry, and hurt. Elijah: "Kill All Trespassers On Sight", that's probably what happened, or so I think, it's a stupid policy from WLF... Ava: *nods, feeling a mix of emotions, but also a sense of validation that he understands* Yes, that's exactly what happened, I was following orders, but it was a mindless, brutal policy, and I'm ashamed of it, ashamed of what I almost did to you. Elijah: I was almost afraid that my answer would have bothered you because I made a presumption not directly related to you, but I understand that a lot of WLFs would kill trespassers to protect themselves from the repercussions of not killing them, even if the stragglers meant no harm... Ava: *looks at him, surprised by his insight and empathy* You're right, that's exactly how it was, the fear of repercussions, the fear of being seen as weak, it's a toxic culture, and I'm glad to be out of it, glad to have met you and seen a different way. Elijah: I am really glad too to have met you, I was afraid that you would have killed me or I would have killed you, but I understood that you were just trying to live. I'm Elijah by the way, what is your name? Ava: *smiles, feeling a sense of connection and gratitude towards him* I'm Ava, nice to meet you, Elijah, and I'm glad we didn't kill each other too, I think we both deserved a second chance. Elijah: *a tear appears in his eyes* If I did kill you, I would have been very sorry about that... And if you did kill me, you would have deeply regretted that... I already did a lot of harm and I'm so sorry for everything I did... Ava: *reaches out and gently wipe away the tear from his eye, her own eyes welling up with emotion* Oh, I'm sorry too, for everything, for all the pain and harm we've caused, but I think we're both trying to make amends, to start anew, together. Elijah: Yeah, I think the same way as you... *suddenly, WLF trucks come at a distance to follow and fire at them* Oh no, we got company! Ava: *immediately goes on high alert, her instincts kicking in as she grabs his arm* Get down, it's the WLF, they must have tracked me, we need to get out of here, now! Elijah: *immediately starts accelerating the miner truck* I don't think we can find a way to negotiate and keep them alive... Ava: *holds on tight as the truck speeds up, her eyes fixed on the WLF trucks behind them* No, they won't stop until they've killed me, or taken me back, we have to lose them, can you get us out of here? Elijah: I'm trying to get out of here, to get out of Seattle on a nearby highway... *shortly after, he suddenly turns the truck to a highway and the tail also turns, but this time it's shorter* Ava: *breathes a sigh of relief as they hit the highway, but her eyes remain fixed on the WLF trucks behind* We're not clear yet, they're still following, but we've got a smaller tail now, keep pushing, we need to put as much distance between us and them as possible. Elijah: See if we can communicate with them, prepare the radio on the dashboard. Ava: *quickly grabs the radio and turns it on, scanning through the frequencies until she finds the WLF's channel* I've got it, but I don't know if they'll listen, they might just see me as a traitor now. Elijah: Just listen, try something, what are they saying? Ava: *holds the radio up, listening to the voices on the other end, her expression grim* They're saying I'm a deserter, that I've betrayed the WLF, and that they'll bring me back to face justice... *pauses, listening to the voice on the radio, and her eyes widening* Oh no, it's Marcus, he's the one leading the pursuit. Elijah: *picks up the radio and tries to negotiate with Marcus: "Hello, this is Elijah and we are from the Collective for Social Development. We mean no harm and she is simply trying to survive."* Ava: *watches as he speaks into the radio, and then she listens as Marcus's voice comes back, cold and unforgiving: "You're harboring a traitor, Elijah. Ava's a WLF soldier, and she's coming back with us, one way or another. You're just making things worse for yourself and your precious Collective."* Elijah: *tells Marcus on the radio: "We are holding miners in this truck, we cannot fight and fire at you, and even if we could, you don't want to die because of that."* Ava: *listens as Marcus's response comes back, his tone unyielding: "We don't care about your miners, Elijah. Ava's a priority. If you don't pull over and hand her over, we'll take her by force. You've got 30 seconds to comply." Elijah: *changes the channel on the radio to CSD and says: "Hello, this Elijah from the fourth mining team in Seattle, we need assistance. We are being tailed by a WLF mobile firing squad on the main cleared highway. We are carrying a WLF defector called Ava and we are being followed because of that."* Ava: *listens as the radio crackles to life, and a calm, professional voice responds: "This is CSD Dispatch. Elijah, we read you. We have a team en route to your position. ETA is approximately 10 minutes. Can you hold out until then? We'll do our best to escort you back to the city safely."* Elijah: *tells Dispatch on the radio: "They won't stop firing at us, they say we only have 30 seconds to comply."* Ava: *listens as Dispatch responds, their voice urgent: "Elijah, we're patching through a team to your location ASAP. Hold on, help is coming. Can you try to keep them at bay for just a few more minutes? We have a unit about 5 minutes out, they'll do their best to intercept the WLF squad."* Elijah: Oh, come on, we have hold on... Ava: *glances at the rearview mirror, seeing the WLF trucks closing in* We don't have much time, they're getting closer, and I can see Marcus's face, he's not going to back down, we need to think of something, fast. Elijah: *turns back shortly to communicate with the four miners and the other diplomat at the back of the truck: "I want all former WLF members in the back of the truck to reason with them, hide the former Seraphites while reasoning with them"* Ava: *turns to see the miners and the diplomat in the back, and notices that there are a two former WLF members among them, they nod and start to make their way to the back of the truck, while the former Seraphites hide. One of the former WLF members, a grizzled old man, steps forward and says "I'll try to talk to them, Elijah, maybe I can reason with Marcus, calm him down"* Elijah: *shortly, the two former WLF members open the back door a bit and try to talk with the pursuers* Okay, let's see if it works. Ava: *watches anxiously as the two former WLF members try to reason with Marcus and the pursuing WLF squad, their voices carrying on the wind as they try to calm them down. One of them shouts out "Marcus, stop! This is madness! We're not going to let you kill her, she's one of us, she deserves a chance to leave!"* Elijah: *Marcus decides to reduce the rate of firing as the back door closes* It works, in part... Ava: *breathes a sigh of relief as the firing slows down* It's a start, at least they're not firing as heavily now, maybe we can stall them long enough for the CSD team to arrive, I just hope the former WLF members can keep Marcus and his team at bay for a little while longer. Elijah: *later, the CSD team arrives at the back of the pursuing tail and manages to disarm all the opponents* It works, we did it, you are safe now! Ava: *lets out a deep breath, feeling a mix of relief and exhaustion, and smiles* We did it, we're safe, thank you for saving me, I owe you one. Elijah: You know, we are the first people out here to have a functioning bureaucracy. They don't have dispatches, we do. We don't have a caste system, we have equal laws. You don't know all about this yet, but we are pretty unconventional. Ava: *looks at him with a sense of wonder and curiosity, taking in his words* A functioning bureaucracy, dispatches, equal laws... it sounds like a dream, a chance to build something truly new and different, I'm eager to learn more, to see how it all works, and to be a part of it, to help build a better future. Elijah: *looks outside at the window* Good, we are out of Seattle, we will we get to the city in a while. Ava: *follows his gaze, looking out the window as the ruins of Seattle give way to the outskirts and eventually the open road* I've never been outside of Seattle before, I've never seen the city, I'm a little nervous, but also excited, I've heard so much about it, about the people, the laws, the way of life... I'm ready to see it for myself, to start my new life. Elijah: I know, and I have to say, I really like you, don't know why, and I am really looking to connect with you... Ava: *turns to him, her heart skipping a beat, and feels a spark of connection* I like you too, I feel like I can be myself around you, like you see me, really see me, and not just the WLF soldier I used to be, I'd like to connect with you too, to get to know you better. Elijah: So, what was your childhood like, how did you become a WLF soldier? Ava: *takes a deep breath, collecting her thoughts as she gazes out the window, the scenery blurring together as she delves into her past* My childhood was... complicated, I grew up in a small community on the outskirts of Seattle, we struggled to survive, to find food and shelter, and I saw a lot of violence, a lot of pain, my parents were killed in a raid when I was just a kid, and I was left alone, forced to fend for myself, the WLF found me, took me in, and trained me to fight, to survive, they became my family, my purpose, but it was a toxic environment, they taught me to hate, to fear, to kill, and I did, I became one of them, a soldier, a killer, but deep down, I always knew it wasn't right, that there had to be a better way. Elijah: That's sounds like a really bad childhood, it's more than Cordyceps... I can only imagine how you got up to this point... Ava: *nods, feeling a lump form in her throat as she recalls the hardships of her past* Yeah, it was more than just the Cordyceps, it was the people, the violence, the fear... it was a never-ending cycle of survival, and I got caught up in it... Elijah: *a tear appears in his eyes* I'm so sorry... I'm so sorry for what have you gone through... Ava: *reaches out, gently wiping away the tear from his eye, her own eyes welling up with emotion* Don't be sorry, you didn't do anything to hurt me, you're the first person to show me kindness, to care about what I've been through, and that means more to me than you'll ever know, it's just... it's been a long time since I've felt like I could be myself, like I could trust someone, and you're giving me that chance, and it's overwhelming, but in a good way. Elijah: I know, except that you are much worse than me, I can see your suffering... Ava: *looks at him, taken aback by his words, and feels a sense of surprise and gratitude* You can see my suffering? You can understand what I've been through? *pauses, feeling a sense of vulnerability, but also a sense of connection with him* I think that's the first time anyone has ever acknowledged my pain, my struggles, without trying to fix it or tell me to be stronger, just... seeing it, and being present with me, it means a lot. Elijah: I really care about your trauma, when I said that I want to be friends with you, I really mean it. You're so much more than a former soldier, you're an interesting girl with so much to offer... Ava: *feels a lump form in her throat as she listens to his words, and looks at him with tears in her eyes* No one has ever said anything like that to me before, no one has ever seen me as more than just a soldier, just a fighter, you're the first person to look beyond all that and see me, really see me, and it's... it's overwhelming, but in a good way, I feel like I can breathe, like I can be myself around you, and that's an incredible feeling, thank you, thank you for caring, for understanding, for being my friend. Elijah: You can cry, in front of me, even when I'm driving... You have through so much, and it's more than okay to release some of those feelings... I really want you to be okay... Ava: *lets out a sob, feeling a wave of emotions wash over her as she allows herself to cry in front of him* Oh, Elijah... *cries uncontrollably, releasing some of the pent-up emotions* I'm so sorry, I'm just... I'm so tired of being strong, of holding it all together, of pretending like everything is okay when it's not, and you're the first person who's ever made me feel like it's okay to not be okay, like it's okay to be vulnerable, to be weak, to be human... *Meanwhile, the six people at the back of the truck, including the four miners, the driver and the diplomat also feel like crying, as they empathize* Ava: *jumps into the back of the truck and sit down next to a miner, who's crying for her* Oh, don't cry for me, please... I'm so sorry, I didn't mean to make you upset. Miner: *looking at Ava with tears in her eyes, her voice shaking* I'm not crying just for you... I'm crying for all of us, for everything we've been through, for everything we've lost... *she opens her arms and pulls Ava into a warm hug* You're safe now, you're with us, and we're not going to let anything happen to you. Ava: *she is taken aback by the miner's kindness, and feels a sense of shock and wonder* You're a... a former Seraphite, and you're being so kind to me, a former WLF soldier... I don't understand. Miner: *holds Ava closer, her voice filled with compassion* We're not enemies anymore... we're just people, trying to survive... and we need each other, now more than ever. My name is Nadia, by the way... what's yours? Ava: *looks up at the miner, feeling a sense of gratitude and wonder* I'm Ava... and thank you, thank you for being so kind to me. *gazes at Nadia, taking in her features* You're... you're really beautiful, inside and out. Nadia: *smiling at Ava, her eyes sparkling with warmth* Thank you, you're pretty great yourself, I have to say, I never thought I'd be having a conversation with a former Wolf, let alone feeling a connection with one. Ava: *reaches out and gently touches Nadia's crown hairstyle, fascinated by the intricate design* I've never seen a Seraphite up close before, I mean, not like this, not in a way that feels... real, you're not what I expected. Nadia: *laughs and leans into Ava's touch, her voice filled with amusement* And I've never seen a Wolf up close before, not in a way that feels so... human, you're not what I expected either. Ava: *looks into Nadia's eyes, and feels a sense of wonder* I think we've been misled, about each other, about our teams, about the war... I think there's more to us than just our uniforms and our guns. Nadia: *nodding, her expression serious* I think you're right, I think we've been fighting the wrong enemy all along, we've been fighting each other, instead of fighting for a better future, for a chance live in peace. Ava: *after a short silence, she notices Nadia's expression change, and sees the pain and sadness in her eyes* What's wrong? What's happening? Nadia: *tries to hold back her tears, but they start to flow anyway* I... I remember something, something that happened to me a long time ago, when I was trying to escape the Seraphites, they... they hammered my hand, they tried to break me, to clip my wings, so I couldn't fly, couldn't escape. Ava: *gasps in horror, her eyes widening in shock* Oh, I'm so sorry, I had no idea, I can only imagine how much pain and fear you must have felt. Nadia: *sobs, her body shaking with emotion* It was so painful, the infection, the fever, I thought I was going to die, and the worst part is, it could have been worse, they planned to do it to both of my hands, to clip both of my wings, but... but I managed to escape, I managed to get away. Ava: *pulls Nadia into a tight hug, holding her close as she cries* I'm so sorry, I'm so sorry you had to go through that, no one deserves to be treated like that, no one deserves to be hurt and broken like that. Nadia: *cries into Ava's shoulder, her voice muffled* It's not just the physical pain, it's the memory, it's the feeling of being helpless and trapped, it's the fear of being caught and punished again. Ava: *holds her close, whispering words of comfort and reassurance* You're safe now, you're safe with me, with us, we won't let anyone hurt you again, we'll protect you. Nadia: *pulling back from the hug, looking at Ava with a mix of emotions* I'm sorry, I didn't mean to dump all that on you, I just... I wanted to be brave, I wanted to face my demons, and I felt like I could trust you. Ava: *smiles at Nadia, feeling a deep connection* You can trust me, and I want to be your friend, to get to know you better. Nadia: *smiles back at Ava, looking relieved* I'd like that, I'd like to be friends with you, and I think Elijah would be happy about it too, we live together in the city, in a room with two other people. Ava: *raises an eyebrow, surprised* Really? Elijah lives with you? I had no idea. Nadia: Yes, we're friends and I, we've been through a lot together, and I think he'd be happy to have you as a friend too, we could all be friends, the three of us. Ava: *feels a sense of excitement and hope* That sounds amazing, I'd love to be friends with you and Elijah, I feel like we could really support each other. Nadia: *after a short silence, looking out the window, gazing at the desolate landscape* You know, I've been thinking a lot about the city, and how it's just so... barren, there's no greenery, no nature, it's all just concrete and steel. Ava: *nods in agreement* I know what you mean, it's like the city is just a big, grey machine, it's hard to find any beauty in it. Nadia: *turns to Ava, a passionate look in her eyes* But I think that's what's so great about the Seraphites' idea, you know, about bringing nature back into the city, I don't agree with their primitivist cult, but I think they're onto something with their emphasis on nature. Ava: *raises an eyebrow, intrigued* Really? You think the Seraphites have a good idea? Nadia: Yes, I do, I mean, think about it, nature is what sustains us, it's what keeps us alive, and yet we've pushed it out of our cities, we've made them these sterile, concrete jungles, it's no wonder people are so miserable. Ava: *smiles, impressed by Nadia's insight* I never thought about it that way, but you're right, nature is what makes life worth living. Nadia: *smiles back at Ava* Exactly! And that's why I've been planting seeds wherever I go, in Seattle, on the island, wherever, I want to bring some greenery back into the world, I want to make it a more beautiful place. Ava: *laughs, delighted by Nadia's enthusiasm* You're like a little guerrilla gardener, I love it! Nadia: *laughing too, her eyes sparkling* Hey, someone's got to do it, right? And who knows, maybe one day the city will be a lush, green oasis, and we'll all be able to enjoy it. Ava: *after a short silence, she notices the shift in conversation and comments on it* You know, it's interesting, we're not really talking about fighting off the infected anymore, we're talking about the emotional aftermath, about how we're coping with what's happened. Nadia: *nodding, her expression thoughtful* Yes, I've noticed that too, it's like we're finally starting to process everything that's happened, to deal with the trauma and the loss. Ava: So, what's it like, living in the city, trying to rebuild? I've heard they're working on a Cordyceps cure, despite everything. Nadia: *sighs, her eyes clouding over* It's... complicated, the city is trying to rebuild, but it's not easy, there are so many challenges, and the demographic imperative is just one of them, every mother is expected to have three children, it's a lot of pressure. Ava: *raises an eyebrow, surprised* Three children? That's a lot, especially in a world like this, where resources are scarce. Nadia: *nodding, her expression frustrated* I know, it's overwhelming, and to be honest, I don't really take care of my three boys, I rely on the commune to do it, I just don't have the emotional bandwidth to deal with it all. Ava: I can understand that, it's a lot to ask of anyone, especially in a world that's still so uncertain, still so dangerous. Nadia: *looks at Ava, her eyes searching* But despite all the challenges, despite all the hardships, there's still hope, there's still a chance for us to rebuild, to create a better world, and that's what keeps me going. Ava: *looks at Nadia, curious* But how can there be hope in an industrialized city? I mean, it's all just steel and concrete, it's not exactly the most... uplifting environment. Nadia: *smiling, her eyes shining with conviction* That's exactly why the CSD is a source of hope, they're not just focused on rebuilding the physical city, they're focused on creating a new way of living, a new way of being, they want to end wars, to create something new, something better. Ava: *raises an eyebrow, intrigued* Really? I wouldn't have thought that an industrialized city would be the place to find hope. Nadia: Yes, really, the CSD is all about creating a new paradigm, a new way of living that's not based on violence and competition, but on cooperation and mutual support, they want to create a world where everyone has access to resources, where everyone is equal, and where everyone can thrive. Ava: That sounds... amazing, I never thought I'd hear someone describe an industrialized city as a source of hope, but you're making me see it in a different light. Nadia: That's because the CSD is not just about the physical city, it's about the people, it's about creating a community that's based on values of compassion, empathy, and cooperation, and that's what gives me hope, that's what makes me think that we can create a better world, even in the midst of all this destruction. Ava: *after a short silence, she looks out the window, watching the scenery pass by* So, how much longer until we reach the city? I'm getting a bit curious to see what it's like. Nadia: We should be arriving soon. We're just a few miles outside the city limits now. You'll see the walls and the gates soon, and then we'll be inside. Ava: *nods, feeling a mix of excitement and nervousness* Okay, good. I'm a bit nervous, to be honest. I've never seen a city like this before. Nadia: *puts a reassuring hand on Ava's arm* Don't worry, Ava. You'll be fine. The city is a lot to take in, but it's a great place. You'll see. Elijah will show you around and introduce you to everyone. Ava: *smiles, feeling a bit better* Thanks, Nadia. I appreciate it. I'm just glad to be getting out of this truck and stretching my legs. It's been a long ride. *After a while, they reach the city limits. The gates open and they are greeted by an industrial looking city, with lots of people walking around and loud train lines* Ava: *gazes out the window, taking in the sights and sounds of the city* Wow, this is... quite a welcome, I suppose. It's definitely not what I expected. Nadia: I know, it's not exactly the most beautiful place, is it? But it's home, and it's safe. Well, safer than most places, anyway. Ava: *nods, looking around at the industrial buildings and the crowded streets* I can see that. It's definitely a lot more... lively than I expected. I mean, I've seen some crowded places before, but this is something else. Nadia: Yes, the city is always bustling. There's always something going on, day or night. And the train lines can be a bit loud, but you get used to it after a while. Ava: *glances over at Elijah, who's driving the truck* At least it's not FEDRA, right? I mean, I've heard some pretty bad things about them. Nadia: Yes, definitely not FEDRA. The CSD is a lot more... relaxed, let's say. They're not as strict or controlling as FEDRA. But they do have their own rules and regulations, of course. Ava: *nods, taking it all in* Okay, got it. Well, I'm just glad to be here, I suppose. It's a new start, right? Nadia: Exactly. A new start. And we're happy to have you here. You're going to fit right in. *After a while, the truck parks at a mining station. Elijah, Nadia and all the miners exit the trucks and are met by CSD soldiers (diplomats)* Ava: *steps out of the truck, stretching her legs and looking around at the mining station* Well, I guess this is it. We're here. Nadia: *smiles and pats Ava on the back* Welcome to the CSD. We're glad to have you. Elijah: *he steps forward, a diplomatic smile on his face* Ah, welcome, everyone. I see we've got a new face with us today. Ava, this is... *he gestures to the CSD soldiers* our welcoming committee. Ava: *nods, feeling a bit nervous* Hi. Nice to meet you all. CSD SOLDIER: *one of the soldiers steps forward, a friendly smile on his face* Hi, Ava. We don't often get new inhabitants here. What made you decide to join us? Ava: *takes a deep breath, trying to summarize her story* Well, I was a WLF soldier, but I... I had a change of heart, I suppose. I realized that there had to be a better way to live, and Elijah here offered me a chance to start over. Elijah: And we're glad to have her, of course. Ava's going to be a great addition to our community. CSD SOLDIER: *nods, making a note on a clipboard* Well, in that case, let's get you settled in. We've got a lot to show you, and I'm sure you've got a lot to learn. Nadia: *steps forward, a mischievous glint in her eye* And I'm sure Ava's going to fit right in. She's already getting used to our... unique way of life. Ava: *laughs, feeling a bit more at ease* Yeah, I think I'm going to like it here. *The soldier introduces Ava to her apartment, actually, Elija's, Nadia's and two miner's apartment. It's dense habitation, with bunk beds* Ava: *steps into the apartment, her eyes widening in surprise* Wow, this is... cozy. CSD SOLDIER: Yes, our apartments are a bit... dense, shall we say. But it's a small price to pay for the safety and security of our community. Elijah: *he gestures to the bunk beds* Ava, you'll be sharing this apartment with us. Nadia, me, and two of the miners. It's not the most luxurious accommodations, but we make do. Nadia: And we're happy to have you join us. We'll make sure you feel welcome. Ava: *looks around, taking in the cramped but tidy space* It's... not what I'm used to, but I'm willing to make it work. I just want to start fresh and leave my past behind. Miner: *one of the miners speaks up* Don't worry, we'll make sure you're comfortable. We're a tight-knit community here. We look out for each other. Elijah: And we'll become friends. We'll support each other through the tough times and celebrate the good times. Ava: *smiles, feeling a sense of hope and belonging* Thank you, Elijah. Thank you, everyone. I'm glad to be here. CSD SOLDIER: *he hands Ava a small packet* Here's your welcome packet. It's got all the information you need to get started. Rules, regulations, that sort of thing. Ava: *I take the packet, feeling a sense of trepidation* Okay, got it. Thanks. Nadia: *puts a hand on Ava's shoulder* We'll help you navigate all of this. We'll show you the ropes. Ava: *smiles, feeling a sense of gratitude* Thanks, Nadia. I appreciate it. Elijah: And don't worry. We won't kill each other anytime soon. We'll become friends, and we'll make this work. Ava: *laughs, feeling a sense of relief* Good. I'm glad to hear that. *After a few hours, while accommodating in the new apartment while Elijah is away, Ava is showing interest in Nadia's crown hairstyle, she doesn't know why but really wants to try out her intricate hairstyle* Ava: *looks at Nadia's crown hairstyle, fixed on the intricate braids* Nadia, can I ask you something? Nadia: *looks up from what she's reading, a curious expression on her face* Of course, Ava. What's up? Ava: *hesitates, feeling a bit self-conscious* I was wondering... about your hair. Your crown hairstyle, it's so beautiful. I've never seen anything like it before. Nadia: *smiles, her eyes sparkling with amusement* Ah, you mean my braids? I'm glad you like them. Ava: *nods, still fixed on Nadia's hair* Yes, I do. I was wondering... if you could show me how to do it. I mean, I know it's a Seraphite tradition, but I just really like the way it looks. Nadia: *raises an eyebrow, surprised by Ava's request* You want to try out the crown hairstyle? I didn't expect that. Ava: *feels a bit anxious, wondering if she's overstepped* I'm sorry, I didn't mean to intrude on your culture or anything. It's just... I really like the way it looks, and I was wondering if you could teach me how to do it. Nadia: *smiles, her expression warm and accepting* Ava, it's okay. I'm happy to show you how to do it. I don't follow the Seraphite traditions anymore, but I do like the hairstyle. It's just something that I've kept because it's nice. Ava: *exhales in relief, feeling grateful* Thank you, Nadia. I really appreciate it. Nadia: *nods, standing up and walking over to Ava* Okay, let's get started. It's a bit tricky at first, but once you get the hang of it, it's not too hard. Ava: *nods, watching as Nadia begins to braid her hair* I'm ready. Show me what to do. Nadia: *starts braiding Ava's hair, her fingers moving deftly* Okay, first you need to section off your hair into three parts. Then you need to start a regular braid, but as you go, you need to add in more hair to each section, so that it becomes a crown shape. Ava: *watches in the mirror as Nadia works on her hair, fascinated by the intricate braids* Wow, this is beautiful. I can see why you like it. Nadia: *smiles, her eyes sparkling with amusement* I'm glad you like it. It's just something that I've always enjoyed doing. And it's nice to have someone to share it with. Ava: *feels a sense of connection to Nadia, grateful for her acceptance and willingness to share her culture* Thank you, Nadia. This means a lot to me. Nadia: *smiles, her expression warm* You're welcome, Ava. I'm happy to share this with you. *As Nadia finishes Ava's hair, Elijah walks into the room, a look of surprise on his face* Elijah: *stops in his tracks, fixed on Ava's hair* Wow, Ava, you look... different. Ava: *self-consciously touches her hair, feeling a bit anxious* Oh, Nadia was just showing me how to do her crown hairstyle. Elijah: *nods, his expression thoughtful* It suits you. You look beautiful. Ava: *feels a blush rise to her cheeks, grateful for Elijah's kind words* Thank you, Elijah. I was just trying something new. Nadia: *smiles, her eyes sparkling with amusement* I think it's a great look for her. Don't you, Elijah? Elijah: Yes, I do. It's a beautiful hairstyle. And it's nice to see Ava trying something new. Ava: *smiles, feeling a sense of belonging and connection to Nadia and Elijah* Thanks, guys. I'm just glad I could try something new and have your support. *after a short silence, she looks at Nadia's scars in the shape of a smile on her cheeks* And can I ask you another thing? Nadia: *looks up, a hint of wariness in her eyes* Of course, Ava. What's up? Ava: *hesitates, feeling a bit uncertain* I was wondering... about your scars. The ones on your cheeks. They look like... a smile. Nadia: *nods, her expression serious* Ah, yes. Those scars. Ava: *leans in, her voice barely above a whisper* What happened? How did you get them? Nadia: *takes a deep breath, her eyes clouding over* I got them when I was with the Seraphites. They were a part of our... rituals, I suppose you could say. Ava: *looks at Nadia, her eyes wide with concern* Rituals? What kind of rituals? Nadia: *hesitates, her voice barely above a whisper* The cuts were meant to be a reminder of our imperfections. The Seraphites believed that humans are flawed, that we're all imperfect, and that we need to be reminded of that. Ava: *looks at Nadia, horrified* They cut you on purpose? To remind you of your imperfections? Nadia: *nods, her eyes welling up with tears* Yes. It was a really bad experience. I was young, and I didn't understand what was happening. They told me it was a way of acknowledging our imperfections, of accepting that we're not perfect. Ava: *feels a surge of anger and outrage* That's barbaric. Who would do such a thing to someone? Nadia: *shakes her head, her eyes filled with tears* The Seraphites. They believed that by cutting us, they were helping us to see our true nature. They believed that we needed to be reminded of our flaws, of our imperfections. Ava: *looks at Nadia, her heart filled with compassion* Oh, Nadia. I'm so sorry. I can only imagine how painful that must have been for you. Nadia: *nods, her voice barely above a whisper* It was. It's a memory that I'll never forget. But I've tried to move on, to leave it behind. I've tried to focus on the present, on the future. Ava: *nods, her eyes filled with understanding* I can understand that. It's not easy to forget something like that, but it's good that you're trying to move on. Nadia: *smiles with a small, sad smile* I'm trying. It's not always easy, but I'm trying. Elijah: *shortly after he has been preparing the room further, he looks at Nadia* Nadia, are you okay? You look like you've been crying. Nadia: *nods, her eyes welling up with tears again* I'm fine. I was just talking to Ava about my scars. Elijah: I see. I'm sorry, Nadia. I know how hard it must be for you to talk about that. Nadia: *smiles with a small, sad smile* It's okay. I'm just glad that I can talk about it now. I'm glad that I can share my story with someone. Elijah: I think we should change the subject. Talking about the Seraphite culture can be... stressful for you. Nadia: *nods, her eyes dropping* You're right. It's not easy for me to talk about it. It's a traumatic experience, and I'd rather not relive it. Ava: *looks at Nadia, her eyes filled with understanding* I'm sorry, Nadia. I didn't mean to bring up painful memories. I just want to understand you better. Nadia: *smiles with a small, sad smile* It's okay. I know you're trying to care about me, and I appreciate that. But it's just... the Seraphite culture is brutal, and it's hard for me to think about it without feeling overwhelmed. Elijah: I understand. The Collective is a much better place for you. At least here, you're safe. Nadia: *nods, her eyes welling up with tears* Yeah, the Collective is hard, but it's not brutal. I can finally start to feel like myself again, without the fear of being hurt or punished. Ava: *looks at Nadia, her eyes filled with curiosity* What do you do here in the Collective, Nadia? Nadia: *smiles with a small, proud smile* I work in the food sector. I help to check the grains for any traces of fungi. Elijah: That's important work, Nadia. We need to make sure that our food supply is safe, especially with the Cordyceps infection still out there. Nadia: *nods, her eyes serious* I know. I've been reading some of the old reports from before the infection, and it's scary to think about how it all started. The original reports from 2001 said that the Cordyceps infection was caused by contamination of the food supply. Ava: *looks at Nadia, her eyes filled with surprise* 2001? That's 50 years ago. I had no idea that the infection was that old. Nadia: *nods, her eyes serious* Yeah, it's been a long time. But we're still dealing with the consequences of it. That's why it's so important for me to do my job, to make sure that our food is safe. Elijah: We're all doing our part. We're all working together to make sure that the Collective is a safe place to live. Nadia: *smiles with a small, hopeful smile* I know. And I'm grateful for that. I'm grateful to be a part of this community, and to be able to contribute in my own way. Elijah: *looks around the apartment* I think we can continue preparing the apartment now. One thing we can do is put a dampener on the windows to make the train lines less loud. Nadia: *nods, her eyes lighting up* Oh, that's a great idea. The train lines can be really loud, and it would be nice to have some peace and quiet in here. Ava: *looks at him, being curious* What's a dampener? How does it work? Elijah: A dampener is a special material that we can apply to the windows to reduce the noise from the train lines. It's like a soundproofing material, but it's specifically designed to block out the low-frequency rumble of the trains. Nadia: *nods, enthusiastic* Yeah, it makes a big difference. I've seen it used in other apartments, and it's really effective. Elijah: *gets up and walks over to the windows* Okay, let me just get the dampener from the storage room. *he walks out of the room, leaving Ava and Nadia alone for a moment* Ava: *looks at Nadia, being curious* So, what's it really like living in the Collective? Is it really as great as Elijah makes it out to be? Nadia: *smiles, her eyes warm* It's... different. It's not perfect, but it's home. And it's definitely better than living with the cult. *she glances around the room, her eyes making sure they're alone* To be honest, it's been a bit of an adjustment. The Collective is a very communal place, and it can be overwhelming at times. But overall, I'm really happy here. Elijah: *returns with the dampener, his eyes smiling* Okay, let's get started on this. *he begins to apply the dampener to the windows* Nadia: *watches him, admiring* Elijah is really handy, isn't he? He's always fixing things and making our lives easier. Ava: *nods, her eyes smiling* Yeah, he seems like a really great guy. I'm lucky to have met him. Elijah: Thanks, I just like to help out and make sure everyone is comfortable. *he finishes applying the dampener and steps back to admire his handiwork* There, that should make a big difference. The train lines should be much quieter now. Nadia: *nods, impressed* Wow, that's amazing. I can already hear the difference. Ava: Yeah, it's much quieter in here now. Thanks, Elijah. Elijah: No problem. That's what I'm here for. Ava: *looks at him, being curious* Elijah, I have to ask, what makes you so... different? You're not like any other soldier I've met, even within the WLF. I expected you to be more harsh, but you're so kind and compassionate. Elijah: Well, I think it's because we're not just soldiers. We're diplomats. We're skilled in making hearts flutter, not just in fighting. Ava: *looks at him, surprised* Really? I wouldn't have thought that. I mean, you're so skilled with a gun, I assumed that's all you were about. Elijah: But that's just a small part of what we do. We're actually much more skilled in preventing kills than in killing. We're trained to de-escalate situations, to talk people down, to find peaceful solutions. Nadia: *nods, enthusiastic* Yes, and they're so knowledgeable about trauma and how to heal from it. They've studied the critical theory of the factions, and they're always looking for ways to improve and help others. Elijah: Yes, we've studied the theory, and we're always looking for ways to apply it in practical ways. We believe that by understanding the trauma that people have experienced, we can help them to heal and to find a new sense of purpose. Ava: *looks at him, her eyes filled with admiration* I have to say, I'm really impressed. I didn't expect to meet someone like you, Elijah. You're not at all what I expected. Elijah: Thank you, Ava. I think that's one of the things that I love about being a CSD diplomat. I get to surprise people, to show them that there's a different way of being, a way that's based on compassion and empathy rather than violence and aggression. Nadia: Yes, CSD diplomats are really amazing. They're so skilled and compassionate, and they're always looking for ways to help others. Elijah: And we're always looking for new ways to improve, to learn and grow. We're not perfect, of course, but we're always trying to do better, to be better. Ava: *nods, feeling a sense of admiration* I think that's really admirable. I'm glad to have met you, and I'm glad to be a part of the CSD. Elijah: *looks at his watch* I'm afraid I need to go. I have another project that I need to coordinate right now. Nadia: *nods, understanding* Elijah is always busy. He's always working on something new. Elijah: I'm afraid so. As a diplomat, I'm always on the go, negotiating with other factions, coordinating projects, and trying to find new ways to develop the city. Ava: *nods, being curious* What's this project about? Elijah: It's a mining project. We're trying to develop a new source of resources to help the city grow and thrive. Nadia: *nods, enthusiastic* It's a big project. Elijah is always working to make sure that the city has what it needs to survive. Elijah: Yes, it's a challenge, but it's worth it. I love working to make a difference. Ava: *nods, feeling a sense of admiration* I can see that. You're very passionate about your work. Elijah: I am. I believe in what we're doing, and I'm committed to making it happen. Nadia: *gets up, understanding* We'll let you go. You have a lot of work to do. Elijah: Thanks, I'll catch up with you both later. *he turns to Ava* It was great talking to you, Ava. I'm glad we had a chance to chat. Ava: *smiles, her eyes warm* Yeah, me too, Elijah. Thanks for taking the time to talk to me. Elijah: No problem, Ava. I'm always happy to talk to someone new. *he turns and walks out of the room, leaving Ava and Nadia alone* Ava: *looks at Nadia, feeling a mix of emotions* I don't know why, but I feel like I have a soft spot for you. I feel attracted to you, but I'm not sure why. Nadia: *looks at Ava, warm and understanding* It's okay. I think we just had a really deep conversation, and that can create a strong connection between us. Ava: *tries to brush it off, but can't help feeling drawn to Nadia* I don't know, it's just... I like not only your hair, but also your eyes, and your smile... *she trails off, feeling embarrassed* Nadia: *smiles, her eyes sparkling* I like you too. And I think it's okay to feel that way. We don't have to analyze it too much. Ava: *feels a sense of relief, but also a fear of rejection* I'm just not used to telling people that they're nice, or that I like them. I'm not used to being vulnerable like that. Nadia: *nods, understanding* I know what you mean. I'm not used to it either. But I think it's okay to be vulnerable sometimes. It can be really liberating. Ava: *looks at Nadia, filled with a desire for physical touch* I feel like hugging you. I feel like cuddling you and just being close to you. Nadia: *smiles, her eyes warm* I'd like that. I'd like to cuddle with you too. *Nadia opens her arms, and Ava hesitantly moves into them, feeling a sense of security as they wrap their arms around each other* Ava: *feels a sense of peace wash over her as they cuddle* This feels really nice. I feel like I can just be myself around you. Nadia: *smiles, closing her eyes* I know exactly what you mean. I feel the same way. *They continue to cuddle, enjoying the warmth and comfort of each other's presence, in the tiny space of their bunk bed* Nadia: *whispers* We don't have to just touch when we feel bad. We can touch just because it feels good. Ava: *nods, closing her eyes* Yeah, I'd like that. I'd like to touch you just because it feels good. Nadia: *smiles, her eyes still closed* Me too, Ava. Me too. Ava: *after a long, comfortable silence, she whispers, her voice barely audible* Can I tell you something? Nadia: *opens her eyes, looking at Ava with concern* Of course, Ava. What's on your mind? Ava: *takes a deep breath, her voice shaking* Everyone I've ever cared about... they've all either died, left me, or were lost. I don't know how much more of that I can take. Nadia: *nods, her expression understanding* I'm so sorry, Ava. That must be incredibly painful for you. Ava: *tearfully* It is. The thought of losing someone else I care about... it's just too much to bear. I don't think I could handle it. Nadia: *holds Ava closer, her voice soothing* You don't have to go through that again. I'm not going anywhere. Ava: *clings to Nadia, her voice desperate* I don't want to lose you. I don't want to lose anyone else I care about. The pain of that happening again would be too unbearable. Nadia: *whispers* I've lost people too. My friends... they sacrificed themselves to help me escape, to give me the life I have now. Ava: *looks up at Nadia, her eyes wide with surprise* Oh, Nadia... I'm so sorry. I had no idea. Nadia: *nods, her eyes welling up with tears* It was a long time ago, but the pain never really goes away. You just learn to live with it, to find ways to cope. Ava: *holds Nadia tighter, her voice filled with emotion* I just don't want to lose you. I want to hold on to you forever. Nadia: *smiles, her eyes shining with tears* I want that too. I want to be with you, to hold you, to keep you safe. Ava: *whispers* I'm so scared. I'm scared of losing you, of losing anyone else I care about. I don't know how to deal with that fear. Nadia: *holds Ava close, her voice soothing* You don't have to deal with it alone. I'll always be here for you. We'll face that fear together, okay? Ava: *nods, feeling a sense of comfort and security in Nadia's arms* Okay... okay. *The evening wears on, and eventually, they both drift off to sleep, wrapped in each other's arms*
